Antidesma in Malesia and Thailand. Petra Hoffmann. 2005. Antidesma is a genus in the family Phyllanthaceae (Malpighiales; Euphorbiaceae sensu lato). It comprises trees and shrubs which are conspicuous by their racemes of often abundant red or purple fruits. The genus is most diverse in South-East Asia where it is commonly found in the understorey of tropical forests as well as in open vegetation. This taxonomic revision describes the 56 species and 13 varieties occurring in Malesia and Thailand. Separate identification keys for staminate and pistillate plants are presented, and critical characters are illustrated. The distribution of each taxon is shown in a map. Ecology, uses, common names, etymology and conservation status are given, and line drawings of 25 taxa are included. 292pp. 150 x 235mm. 23 line illus. 43 distribution maps. Paperback. EUPHORBIACEAE
Euphorbiacearum. Alan Radcliffe-Smith. 2001. Only 2 volumes of Dr. John Hutchinson's last major work, The Genera of Flowering Plants were ever published (Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1964 & 1967). From the Conspectus of Orders & Sequence of Families given at the beginning of Vol. I, it can be seen that Vol. III, had it appeared, would have begun with Euphorbiaceae, and in fact Hutchinson's manuscript for this, housed in the Kew Archives, was almost complete at the time of his death in 1972 at the age of 88. The author has been allowed to use the manuscript extensively for the present work, although the system of classification of the genera he has followed is Webster's, which appeared in the Annals of the Missouri Botanical Gardens in 1994. The only Tribe that Hutchinson left unfinished was the very difficult Tribe Hippomaneae, and this has been ably treated in the present work by Dr. Hans-Joachim Esser of Hamburg, a specialist in the group, who is currently working in Harvard. The contents are as follows: Introduction; Taxonomy; List of New Taxa; Synopsis of the Classification; Bibliography; Index. 455pp. Paperback. ISBN 1 84246 022 6. $90.00
