Diatom
taxonomy and ecology. From local discoveries to global impacts. Festschrift in
honor of Prof.Dr. Horst Lange-Bertalot's 75th birthday. Editors: Andrzej
Witkowski; John P. Kociolek; Pierre Compère. 2012. (Beihefte zur Nova Hedwigia,
Volume 141). The twenty-nine peer-reviewed contributions to this impressive
volume sweep the entire range of current research on diatoms - from the taxonomy
of freshwater and marine diatoms, the fossil record of both terrestrial and
marine habitats, planktonic diatoms, potential of diatoms and ostracods as
bioindicators, application of diatom assemblages to climatic reconstructions,
the use of molecular tools in phylogeny, tracing the threat of invasive and
potentially toxic diatoms to the highlights of the diatom collection of Józef
Pantocsek. The wide range of topics covered herein delineates the equally wide
range of research interests of Prof. Horst Lange-Bertalot. The papers were
contributed by friends and colleagues on the occasion of his 75th birthday which
was celebrated during the 5th Central European Diatomologists Meeting (=25th
German-speaking Diatomologists Meeting) in Szczecin, Poland, in February 2011.
Many of the authors have benefited from Prof. Lange-Bertalot´s profound
knowledge of diatoms in general, and his floristic skills in particular. The
impact of his work on diatom research has been extraordinary, with important
implications for ecology (from water pollution to climate change), biodiversity
and conservation sciences. This has been due in large part to the breadth and
depth of Prof. Lange-Bertalot’s research record in four areas: evaluation of
water quality using diatoms, floristics with a focus on Europe, floristics with
a worldwide perspective, and synthetic work to organize and integrate these
other studies. This tremendous volume honors Professor Horst Lange-Bertalot, one
of the pre-eminent diatom taxonomists.
This volume is of great interest for all researchers working on diatoms and
their impact on biodiversity, conservation sciences and ecology in general. IV ,

Diatomeenflora einer Tropeninsel. Revision der Collection Maillard und Untersuchung
neuen Materials. 1995. The present publication deals with some aspects of the diatom flora
of New Caledonia. The essential aim was, to find MAILLARDs new taxa in the original slides
and to prove them by photomicrographs. After a critical valuation they have been
validated, if feasible, according to the rules of the International Code of Botanical
Nomenclature. This was necessary, since all his descriptions are formally invalid. The
results of the revision can be summarized briefly by the following numbers: Taxa total:

summary (abbreviated): Diatom taxa of New Caledonia are to a large extent cosmopolitan,
especially with regards to marine taxa although freshwater species are also relevant.
Other taxa are characteristic elements of large climatic regions, occuring in both
hemispheres in tropical, subtropical or in moderate climatic conditions, as well as the
Arctic and Antartic. The zonal groups of the Paleatropis are also well represented here in
limnic and marine habitats, whereas only one new species, but no endemics, could be found
in the restricted marine littoral area under investigation. It was confirmed by these
investigations that comparatively few taxa are endemics of distinct continental areas or
of islands. Comparison with other islands in the Pacific area shows that only 1.5% of the
known diatom flora of Papua New Guinea seem to be endemic, 2.3% in the North Island of New
Zealand, 2.1% of Eastern Australia, 0.66% of Hawaii, none in Viti Levu, the main island of
the Fijis. New Caledonia offers an exceptional phenomenon of diversity probably due to
adaptive radiation. These investigations revealed that approximately 40% of the total 643
taxa are new to science and not found elsewhere. The authors describe New Caledonia as the
"Galapagos of diatoms." contents: main results: revision of Manguin's taxa,

Ocean). The present monograph is a detailed taxonomical description of the diatom
flora of the Laptev Sea (Arctic Ocean). The Laptev Sea is one of the most important
epicontinental seas of the Arctic, marked by large freshwater inputs. A total of 344 taxa
(56 genera) was identified. The most diverse genera are Navicula (72 taxa), Pinnularia (27
taxa), Nitzschia (21 taxa), Cymbella (20 taxa), Eunotia (20 taxa), Fragilaria (20 taxa)
and Achnanthes (16 taxa). In surface sediments, the most abundant species are typical
marine planktonic diatoms, such as Chaetoceros spp., Fossula arctica, Fragilariopsis
oceanica, Thalassiosira antarctica, Thalassiosira hyperboreae, and Thalassiosira
nordenskioeldii. Approximately 60 \% of the diatoms found in the Laptev Sea are freshwater
species which originally occur in lakes and rivers of the Siberian hinterland. These
diatoms are transported into the Laptev Sea by five large streams. 170 pages, 5 fig., 1

- Band 41: Reavie, Euan D., John P. Smol, 1998: Freshwater
diatoms from the St. Lawrence River. With this book, Reavie and Smol present the first
detailed description of the diatom flora of the St. Lawrence River, Canada. They provide
light micrographs of 227 diatom taxa from 35 genera, recorded in 299 samples from the
freshwater portion of the St. Lawrence River, between Kingston and Quebec City. Diatoms
were identified in both plankton samples and periphytic collections (rocks, macrophytes,
filamentous green algae) as well as sediment core samples. High species diversity is
observed so that the discussion was limited to the more common taxa (that is taxa that
occured in at least three samples, or had a relative abundance of more than 1% in one
sample). The taxonomic and iconographic sections of this book include descriptions and
illustrations of the taxa encountered, as well as autecological information. These data
may assist future biomonitoring and paleolimnological study efforts 136 p., with 3 figs.,

Caledonian diatoms and tries to answer the question whether there exists a correlation
between the ultramafites and the occurrence of the newly described (presumably endemic)
New Caledonian diatoms. 249 of the 628 diatoms they found are new and the authors
discovered that the diatoms found in non-ultramafic habitats are distinguishable from
those found in ultramafic waters. Additionally the evaluation of the samples showed that
almost half of the newly-described taxa live in ultramafic habitats in the south of the
main island. 205 pp., 18 figures, 12 tables, 5 plates. ISBN 3-443-57034-8. DM 110/$65.00
